Jewellery Care & FAQs

Is your jewellery handmade?

Yes! Everything is lovingly handmade in our North London workshop.

You can read more about our team and workshop here.

What is your jewellery made from?

We use a selection of metal components and a combination of acrylic, sustainably sourced mother of pearl and FSC certified wood depending on the piece.

Our earring posts and butterflies are made from sterling silver and our hoop earrings are on 14k gold-filled or sterling silver hoops. All metal that touches the skin is nickel-free. Further information can be found below under Jewellery Care.

We do have surgical steel posts available as an alternative. If you would be interested in purchasing our earrings with surgical steel posts, please email hello@wolfandmoon.com.

When will an item be back in stock?

We aim to restock our collection as quickly as possible. You can sign up to a back in stock alert on the product page too.

Do you do custom designs?

Unfortunately this is not a service we offer at this time.

Can I pre-order jewellery?

Unfortunately, we don't accept pre-orders for our jewellery.

I've seen 'No Hoops' or 'No Chain' on a product page. What does this mean?

All of our hoop and necklace charms are designed to be easily interchangeable.

If a product is listed as "No Hoops" or "No Chain," it means you're purchasing just the charms—perfect for those who already have our hoops or chains and want to mix things up with new charm options.

Do you have clip-on earrings?

Yes! We have created a collection of designs with clip-on backs here.

Please note, we are not able to amend our other styles for clip-ons.

Help! I have lost my earring.

Not to worry, we do offer a single earring replacement service. Please send an email along with a photo of your remaining earring to hello@wolfandmoon.com and we can advise.

Can I try on a headpiece?

Yes! Please email hello@wolfandmoon.com to arrange a time to visit us.

JEWELLERY & BAGS CARE

How do I store my jewellery?

Storage

Store your jewellery in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

We recommend storing and transporting your jewellery in the pouch or box provided, to avoid tangled chains, bent earring posts or pieces knocking against each other.

Hoop earrings with charms are best stored with the hoop and charms unassembled.

Wear

Remove jewellery before sleeping, showering, or exercising.

How can I avoid tarnishing or damage?

To keep your jewellery looking its best, store it in a cool, dry place and take it off before sleeping, showering, or working out.

Products like soap, perfume, moisturiser, and suncream can damage certain acrylic elements and metal parts, so it's a good idea to remove your jewellery before applying them.

For detailed care tips based on specific metals, check out the section below: "What metals do you use and how should I care for them?"

How do I clean my jewellery?

All non-metal components can be easily cleaned with a soft, dry cloth. To clean metal parts, please see below.

What metals do you use and how should I care for them?

We use a selection of different metal components depending on the piece. Read about each of our metals and how best to care for them below.

All metal that touches the skin is nickel-free.

14k Gold-Filled

We use 14k gold-filled metal for our hoops and most of our necklace chains.

What is Gold-Filled?

Gold-filled components are crafted with a durable jeweller’s brass core, bonded with a thick layer of 14 karat gold—making up at least 5% of the total weight. This solid gold layer is mechanically fused using heat and pressure, resulting in a long-lasting finish.

Is Gold-Filled Good Quality?

Yes! Gold-filled jewellery is a high-quality, affordable alternative to solid gold. It features a gold layer that is 5 to 10 times thicker than that of gold-plated items, offering greater durability and longevity.

Is It Suitable for Sensitive Skin?

If you have a strong allergy to metals like copper, brass, silver, or rhodium, we recommend avoiding pieces that may contain them, including gold-filled and gold-plated jewellery. However, for those with mild sensitivities, gold-filled jewellery is typically gentle on the skin thanks to its thick outer layer of real gold.

Will It Tarnish?

Gold-filled jewellery is highly resistant to tarnishing and discolouration. With proper care, it can maintain its shine and beauty for over 10 years—even with daily wear.

How Do I Care for Gold-Filled Jewellery?

To keep your jewellery looking its best:

  • Remove it before sleeping, showering, swimming, or working out

  • Store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight

  • Avoid contact with products like moisturiser, perfume, or sunscreen

For cleaning, gently wash with warm water and mild soap, then pat dry with a soft cloth. You can also simply wipe it down after each wear with a dry, soft cloth to maintain its shine.

Sterling Silver

We use sterling silver for our earring posts and butterflies, as well as some hoop styles and necklace chains.

What is Sterling Silver?

Sterling silver is a premium silver alloy made up of at least 92.5% pure silver, combined with small amounts of other metals to enhance its strength and durability.

Is Sterling Silver Suitable for Sensitive Skin?

If you don’t have a known sensitivity to silver, sterling silver is generally safe and comfortable to wear. However, if you've experienced allergic reactions to silver in the past, we recommend choosing an alternative metal.

Does Sterling Silver Tarnish?

Yes, sterling silver can naturally tarnish over time—especially when exposed to moisture, sweat, pollution, or chemicals. The good news? Tarnish can be easily removed with a silver polishing cloth.

How Should I Care for Sterling Silver?

To keep your sterling silver jewellery looking its best:

  • Clean regularly with warm, soapy water and dry thoroughly

  • Use a silver polishing cloth to restore shine and remove tarnish

  • Store in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and humidity

Gold-Plated

Gold Vermeil Plating

Our jewellery features a high-quality layer of 24k gold vermeil, electrochemically plated over sterling silver. We use a durable 2.5 to 3-micron thickness for earrings, pendants, and chains, and an extra-thick 4 microns for rings to ensure maximum longevity.

How Long Will It Last?

All gold plating will naturally wear over time. How quickly this happens depends on how often the piece is worn and how carefully it’s cared for.

Earrings & Necklaces: Areas where there’s more friction—like where a pendant slides on its chain or where an earring back presses onto a post—may show wear sooner. This is completely normal and not considered a fault.

Rings: Rings tend to experience more wear and tear due to frequent contact with surfaces, which can cause the plating to fade faster. Wearing rings alongside others may also increase friction and speed up wear in those areas.

How to Care for Gold Plated Jewellery

To keep your jewellery looking its best for as long as possible, follow these simple tips:

  • Remove before sleeping, showering, swimming, or exercising

  • Gently wipe after each wear with a soft, dry cloth

  • Store in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight

  • Use the pouch or box provided to avoid tangling, bending, or scratching

  • Avoid direct contact with lotions, perfumes, and other chemicals

Cleaning

Clean gently using warm water, mild soap, and a soft cloth. Dry thoroughly before storing. You can also use a polishing cloth specifically designed for gold-plated jewellery.

Skin Sensitivity

Our gold vermeil pieces are made with sterling silver beneath the gold layer. If you have allergies to gold or silver, we recommend avoiding pieces made with these materials.

Brass

We use brass chains and components in some of our designs.

What Is Brass?

Brass is a metal alloy made from copper and zinc. It’s also one of the most sustainable metals available—it can be recycled endlessly, and the recycling process is far more energy-efficient than that of metals like aluminium or steel. In fact, most brass produced in the UK is made from nearly 100% recycled materials.

Is Brass Jewellery Suitable for Sensitive Skin?

In most of our designs, the brass doesn’t come into direct contact with your skin—our earrings and pendants feature our signature wooden backing. The only exception is a small selection of pieces that include brass chains.

If you have a known sensitivity or allergy to brass, copper, or zinc, we recommend avoiding brass-based jewellery.

Will Brass Tarnish?

Yes, brass will naturally oxidise and develop a patina over time. Exposure to moisture, sweat, air pollution, and chemicals can speed up this process. The good news? It’s easy to clean and restore.

How to Care for Brass Jewellery

To keep your brass pieces in great condition:

  • Store in a dry, airtight container when not in use

  • Gently wipe off fingerprints and moisture before storing

  • Avoid prolonged exposure to water and humidity

Each of our brass items comes with a soft jewellery cloth, ideal for removing light tarnish.

For deeper cleaning, use a gentle household metal polish and a soft cloth—Peek is our go-to. Be sure to follow the product’s instructions. You can also create a natural polish at home using a simple paste of lemon juice and baking soda.
