Valentine's Day has pagan routes in the Roman fertility festival Lupercalia. It became associated with St. Valentinus, who, it is said, was put to death on the 14th February after performing banned marriage ceremonies in secret. 

Whilst the focus of Valentine's Day has definitely shifted from this rather grizzly beginning to something far more gentle, it is still a lovely time to treat your sweetheart or yourself.
